Only days before Seminar, Greater Philadelphia Chapter member, Philip S. Deming, CPP, CFE, SPHR, spoke with Security Management about the ASIS Foundation’s Business Watch Program. Funded by a grant from the Department of Justice, the program helps security professionals create cost effective programs and partnerships to increase awareness and institutionalize crime prevention strategies in the workplace and across industries. Deming says the Business Watch program will help private security professionals become strategic business partners within their company, demonstrating value by showing senior management a return on investment. Catch his presentation on the Business Watch Program next week at Seminar.

A 25-year journeyman in the security profession, Deming runs Philip S. Deming & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in human resource and security risk management.

Philip Deming, CPP, CFE, SPHR
What is the Business Watch program? And how does it differ from a Neighborhood Watch program, considering most people are familiar with them?
The Business Watch program was modeled after Neighborhood Watch as an outreach program. It was designed to enhance awareness and institutionalize crime prevention strategies in the workplace, with the support of strategic partners in the community, such as local or state law enforcement and federal agencies. That was the genesis for the program, to get corporations involved in doing their own crime prevention as it relates to their needs and the dynamics of their business.
Greg successfully applied for and received the Life Membership for ASIS as he fulfilled the requirements of continuous membership for over twenty consecutive years and made notable contributions to the local chapter and ASIS Council Member for many years.

I recall the first event which I supported; Greg played a key role in providing leadership and guidance for a first time event coordinator. Greg was one of the presenters for the Student Education program which ASIS GPC members provided a brief overview of specific disciplines to students from a high school in Philadelphia. Greg and the other presenters provided a 40 minute overview of their area of expertise within the world of security and the opportunities for future growth. Greg guided me through the process and provided constructive and supportive feedback along the way.

I received a certificate and a Life Membership card from the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors which made the final determination on Greg’s application and congratulating Greg for his continuous service.
Please take a moment to congratulate Greg on this accomplishment and more importantly, for the many contributions which he provided over the years to the chapter and the society.

Greater Philadelphia Chapter Members:

I hope that you all took the opportunity to enjoy the 4th of July holiday and celebrate our countries independence. Now we are back to work for the summer and as many of you know, we are excited about the activities occurring throughout 2010. We have added Josh Carver to the Chapter Officers page, as he has been appointed as the Secretary position. Josh is the Associate Director of Corporate Security at Shire Pharmaceuticals Inc. Josh is very enthusiastic and has some great ideas. I am certain that Josh will be a great addition to our leadership. Thank you to Jim McGinty, for all of his contributions while in the position of Secretary. Jim reluctantly stepped down earlier this year, as his training obligation with Covenant Security has kept him on the road more than originally planned, which is a positive thing during this economy. Jim has always been a passionate about contributing to our chapter and he assured us that he will continue to be an excellent resource for our chapter now and in the future. Good luck with your travels Jim, we appreciate your contributions.

I would like to give a special thank you to Jim Prout, who coordinated a very successful golf outing. Jim and his committee members Steve Ludeking, Ben Reidell, and Justin Kleskie really did a great job of getting sponsors and great raffle items for the lunch time activity.

Thanks to all of our sponsors, the Philadelphia Chapter raised much needed funds which we will use to give back to the profession in the form of scholarships, educational programs, and recognition of our security personnel. I would also like to thank Gene Cummings of Allied Barton, who coordinated the Phillies fund raiser on June 8. It was a great game, and thanks to Jay Hess and Aramark’s generous donation, we enjoyed food vouchers for the local vendors at the Citizens Park.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday morning July 21, a breakfast meeting. The presenter will be Mr. Anthony Patillo Associate Vice President of Sanofi-Aventis. The topic will be, “How to Build a World Class Security Program”. This is sure to be a very informative program.
Look for more information on the forum page. If you are interested in supporting this committee, please contact Ben Reidell or Sam Vinicur.
